One of the hardest things for me was giving up the milk in my coffee. Cappuccino, Latte, you name it...they all contain milk...and I loved them all! Well, after I started my diet I discovered the ESPRESSO. Small, dark, very strong - the smell alone just WAKES YOU UP. I fell for the espresso and just enjoyed it every time I could. Years later (I am giving away my age .. sort of) the espresso and cappuccino became popular worldwide.
Now, you can get it in many places:
Short Espresso – usually 1 shot of aromatic, delicious coffee.
Long Espresso – 2 or even 3 shots of the above … girls, this is a WAKE UP .. lol
AMERICANO – basically an espresso with hot water added to make it last longer, lol.
And finally, from the land of ice cubes, comes the summer version: iced Espresso and iced Americano.
ENJOY !!!
Hi Wilma,
COFFEE MONSTERS UNITE!
Pre-cohen, I would live on coffee, white with one sugar. Since I started cohens, I have gotten used to black with one sweentner (one or max 2 a day).
On one of my deviance days I tried a coffee with milk again, and guess what, I actually prefer it black now, I just need to kick the 1 sweetner and I will be a happy coffee monster for the future.

I am right there with you! Giving up my wine and coffee were the most difficult on this plan. I am happy to report that I have gone back to my standard drink of an Americano and am just having it black! I am loving it!! Heck, if I can't have wine at least I can have my other vice. One vice down!! :party7:

Right there with you!!! I am a coffee fanatic. I LOVE trying new flavors...lattes, cafe au laits, etc. I was never a huge fan of the real sweet drinks or anything but miss the combination of milk and coffee or espresso. I also have found that an americano is very tasty and learning to enjoy black coffee. Never thought the day would come, as the first time I tried it black, I spit it out.
Does anyone know if you may then add milk back to your diet when you reach refeed?? I do enjoy milk...hot, cold, etc.
Great job on the refraining from wine! It will be worth it!!!

{hi} there Alabama
Yes, milk does come back during the Re-feeding Program – but the lactose (milk sugar) still triggers insulin, so the idea is going to be to try to limit milk and not to have it first thing in the morning… the later in the day, the better.
I love Americano’s too!! {wave}

My trick was to get myself a REALLY good coffeemaker (again, using the money I WOULD have spent on all those triple double mocha americano latte no whip yadda yaddas...) -- it grinds and brews a fresh cup every time, and the "crema" or however it's spelled makes it LOOK like it's got all the bells & whistles, and if you've got GREAT beans (the other indulgence I allowed myself) it tastes like dessert every time!

Good to know, Sasha! Thanks! Guess I can go back to having that afternoon latte:party1: This I am sure is addressed plenty of times, however, I am wondering why it is important to avoid insulin-triggering foods in the morning? I had always heard it is better to have your carbs early in the day in order to burn them off throughout the day. And that eating carbs at night causes it to be stored as fat. Would you mind telling me a little about that??
HI Gail, what kind of coffee maker did you get?

I have a Saeco Odea Giro; I bought it online, but I've seen them at places like Bed Bath & Beyond on occasion. It's not cheap, but if you add up all the coffeehouse coffee you're NOT buying, it works out in your favor -- and anything that keeps you on the 1PD highway is well worth it! I must admit I'm completely spoiled now -- I want my coffee perfectly fresh, and most places don't serve it that way.

Yes, the theory is very popular and often goes side by side with: breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper…
The problem with insulin is that when your body produces too much, it takes the sugar out of your blood stream quickly. The result is a sugar high followed by a sugar low. Low blood sugar signals hunger – so, you eat – usually grabbing something quick and easy ie: more carbs = more insulin = fast blood sugar drop = hungry after 1 ˝ hours and eat again and again and... If you cause this to happen at 8 am, guess what you will be doing all day long…. {noway} do we want that to happen cos this results in obesity.
Rather keep your insulin levels stabilized and when you trigger insulin at night… well, won’t stay up eating all night, but go to bed and sleep – so your blood sugar has the evening to stablise…
Hope that helps :flirt:

Thank you very much, Sasha! It does make total sense to me and I am glad to have the reasoning behind it all. You rock!!!:party2:
Sorry to ask more questions...but what about (after the diet), powdered creamer OR half n half, etc. As it has less carbs, is this an option in the morning??

{hi} there Alabama
Something strange happens to most Diet Buddies – they actually find that their taste buds change – if they used to like creamer / milk in coffee, after the Diet, they tend to find that it no longer tastes as good – many prefer and in fact many stay with back coffee.
Dr Cohen recommends not having milk first thing in the morning - powdered creamer OR half n half, etc would probably also trigger too much insulin. My best advise would be to get there and after the Re-feeding try and see. The way to do this would be to keep a food journal and see if after having creamer you feel hungry / more snacky by 10 am that same day.
Dr Cohen says if you are hungery 1 hour after eating something, you have triggered too much insulin... always keep that in mind.

i agree! i was one of those people who always put cream in my coffee and really wondered if i'd be able to drink it without. now i'm at the point that even when i'm where i want to be weight wise i won't switch back - i'm hooked! goes to show it is such a taste bud thing. still need my packet of splenda though :D

"Dr Cohen recommends not having milk first thing in the morning - powdered creamer OR half n half, etc would probably also trigger too much insulin."
So...why is the multi-million dollar cold cereal industry alway promoting breakfasts with cereal and milk and toast, etc.????? I do NOT question Dr. Cohen's advice AT ALL....but it sure is strange how totally opposite most people eat breakfasts, isn't it??? If you think about the breakfast options out there I bet 80% are totally opposite of what we're really supposed to be eating!! Things like cereal (cold or hot), pancakes, waffles, French toast, toast with butter and jam, bagels, croissants, pastry, etc, etc. I'm sticking with my eggy zuchinni pancakes (and possibly a small piece of ham or bacon) after I'm finished with this diet!!!!

Phyllis,
You asked why is the multi-million dollar cold cereal industry is always promoting breakfasts with cereal and milk and toast, etc.
I would like to add another question: Why is there a multi-million dollar industry for cow milk? Milk has side effects such as postnasal drip, sinus, headaches, snoring, and asthma. Also, Milk = Protein + Sugar. If you have milk in the morning, it might trigger insulin and cause hunger as early as 10 a.m.
The manufacturers are naturally looking for a profit and herefore come up with foods that the public will purchase.
Lets admit that it is much easier to pour milk in a bowl, add tasty cereal and have a quick breakfast. But the fact is that as smart consumers, we need to pick and choose what is good for us and not what is good for the industry, marketing companies, and Kellog's stockowners.
My breakfast is based on low-fat mozzarella cheese and coffee. That is how I start my day and get my body's engine going.
