I have seen so many warings on here about checking curry for fillers like sugar and other stuff. Can anybody recommend a brand and where they got if from, here in the States.

Thanks,

Sorry, I'm still looking myself. I bought some curry today (thought nothing of it) cooked my shrimp in it, read you post, and then checked my container and it wasn't straight curry! It had all kinds of other stuff in it. It had cumin, tumeric, coriander, black pepper, fenugreek, red pepper (not allowed), ginger, celery (only in our veggie portion), and cardamon.

Honestly, I am very frustrated... is curry powder supposed to be all these things? Why can't they label the containers correctly? Or maybe they did! Oh well, I'm frustrated now!

I'm going to look it up and get back to you!

Here is what I found:

<Link removed by Admin>

Curry powder is a blend of up to 20 different herbs and spices, including the commonly used: cardamom, chiles, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, cumin, fennel, fenugreek, mace, nutmeg, pepper, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, saffron, tamarind and tumeric (which gives curry its characteristic golden color). In Indian cooking curry is freshly ground each day (making it far more flavorful and pungent than the mixes sold in the store), and comes in "standard" and "Madras" (hot) versions.

Ethnicity: Indian Ingredient

Season: available year-round

How to store: Curry quickly loses its pungency. It will keep for 2 months in an airtight container.

I know a few of these are not allowed on the program, but most of them I am not sure. I guess I will ask my consultant!

Good luck,

Misha

I found this in one of shasha's posts. Not sure if it what you are looking for.
"TIP: Always read the ingredients on any pre-mixed herbs or spices to make sure they do not contain additives, preservatives, starches, thickeners etc... because these will slow your progress down unnecessarily… and do we want that to happen! Only plain spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric etc are allowed..."

I would go to the organic section or a health food store and remember to always read the labels!! I don't like curry so I have never looked:)

My curry powder is organic... I posted about it on another strand. Has a little cayenne pepper but that's it. I don't use it a lot, but I'm still losing -- so I don't really care :p
