View Full Version : The flu...or the diet??

Jaclyn

I had finally made it 5.5 days without cheating....then came the weekend:

Friday night I went out to eat at a Japanese Steakhouse and was actually able to not deviate from the diet too much other than the not being able to weigh and added butter, soy sauce, etc...Saturday night I had take-out Chinese (yes...I know I know) ...and Sunday night I had Penne w/ Roasted chicken, asparagus, and mushrooms in a creamy marsala sauce and topped it off with a piece of Macadamia Nut Cheesecake.

So...I know what you all are thinking ("gasp", "how could she!?", disappointment, the whole nine :disagree: ...I get it) Eating out is my downfall and will take some time to adjust...bear with me.

:hiding:But before you all come out swinging with :noway: "you must take it 100% as prescribed" and "do you know what you just did to your body!!!???"....let me explain what happened today.....

As I started both Saturday and Sunday....this morning I was back on the bus and following the plan as prescribed. I wasn't feeling that well before heading off to work and was going to call in sick...but figured I should just push myself and see how I feel as the day progresses. Well....lunch time rolled around (for me...that is about 2pm) and I was packing my bags furiously, saying adios to my superiors, and speeding home in fear that I would lose it before being in the comfort of my home!!!:sick: It wasn't more than 1 min. after entering my humble abode that I was keeled over the commode.

So....did I get sick because I have the flu?? Or because my body is reacting to the diet (and my sudden deviation from the diet)? Prior to getting sick...last week I had 3 different occassions in which I had the feeling of nausea and disorientation which were cured after eating. I emailed my consultant and they responded to the disorientation noting that I may have blood pressure flutuations or caffiene withdrawls (Both of which are not the case because I have a heart monitor for exercise...and the disorientation was not during exercise...and do not have any problems with a dependence on caffiene.)

Anyway....I know without going to a doctor it is hard to tell if my symptoms are from a reaction to the diet/sudden deviation and crashes/raises in blood sugar....but anyone else have these occurrances???

Please share your stories and experience so I may have an idea of what my body is going through OR a red flag that I need to see a physician...OR...that I just caught a flu-bug. Either way...it would be nice to hear from you all.

Thank you!!!!

and ps....even through my yucky day....I was able to not deviate today! onto day #2 tomorrow!

{hi} there Jaclyn

Well done on having complete 5.5 days... {duh} about going from bad to absolutely banana's...

I know this is probably not what you want to hear, but more what you NEED to hear:

Bad Girl: You could have asked for grilled food without sauce... or you could have had a plain green salad. Sadly the first deviation already upset your hormones and it just went from bad to worse... I mean cheese cake on Sunday? You're trying to loose weight... what were you thinking?!? {duh}

And, yes it is about choice... the food did not jump into your mouth, you made a choice when you ordered it and another choice when you stuck it into your mouth and chewed it. A good idea would have been to RUN LIKE MAD... But nooooo, you just sat there doing you know what!

I think the problem is that you still love cheese cake (and the other goodies) more than you love becoming thin... We need to work on you changing your mindset... THIN means more than FOOD!

Life is all about choices and some things are just not compatible... ie: cheese cake and dieting are opposites, they don't go hand in hand my friend... the sad news is you have either or, but not both. That's never going to change! After the diet and after the Refeeding you can again have cheese cake... but, not for now...

You need to figure out which is more important to you right now...

What you need to do is decide that you want to do this, I know you want to loose weight and you want to look great and then remember Dr Cohen's words: JUST DO IT!

Make a plan and then stick to it!

(That means NOT HAVING WRONG FOODS... - for a limited time only!)

It's very hard to say why you felt the way you did... could be that your blood sugar was all in a mess, especially if you are sensitive to this. Could be a bug that also resulted in your feeling really bad - I want you to focus hard on getting back onto your diet 100%. Remember that each time you eat wrong it becomes harder to start again. So please do not go on and off and on and off your diet.

The first week is the most difficult and if you keep eating wrong you never get past this point! You need to break this destructive cycle! 5 1/2 days was good, but you need to conquer and get past 5 1/2 days... to a week, 2 weeks, 3 and 4 weeks... then you're going to see RESULTS!

For now please do the following: avoid the yogurt and the cheese options as these are the least filling meals. Please take a second multi-vitamin each day at lunchtime.

If you feel dizzy, nauseas or disorientation in any way, please eat an extra fruit on those days only.

YOU ARE OUR DIET BUDDY! WE LOVE YOU! WE CARE ABOUT YOU!

ABOVE ALL, WE WANT YOU TO BE SUCCESSFUL!!! :bighug:
But only YOU can make this happen...
... And, if you don't:

THE COHEN COPS WILL HAVE TO COME AND ARREST YOU
AND LOCK YOU UP FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!!!
… SO CHOOSE … AND PLEASE!!! ...CHOOSE WISELY!!!

Jaclyn.... I am into day 4 and I went home sick yesterday from work. My stomach was a mess and I was dry heaving. I thought I was sick. My husband thought it might be my body adjusting to my new eating habits, but he is home sick too. Today, I'm starting to feel better. Flu or diet??? The upside is that I got to curl up in bed and watch movies. Good luck this week. Hope you start to feel better.

{hi} Hugentobler & Jaclyn

If your hubby is not on diet and he's home too feeling sick... there is DEFINATELY A BUG going around!!! No doubt about it!!!

Best advise would be to see how you feel and then decide, perhaps a visit to your doctor would be a good idea if you don't feel much better soon!

{grouphug1}

I'm hoping you all bounce back soon!!! {bouncing}

Well I just finished my 12th day on the diet and I'm down 10lbs however, I started feeling the effects of flu-like symptoms a few days ago. Judging from the sick co-workers I've got around me, I would venture the bug has nothing to do with the diet. Although being sick isn't helping while I'm on the diet, instead of going through 20 cans of chicken soup...I just keep thinking that any cheat will screw up all the sacrifices I've made for this past week and a half and mess with my outcomes.

You've got to find a place deep down with some strength to help you motor through the rough spots. I actually bought my wife and kids a box of Dunkin Doughnuts doughnut holes and didn't even consider throwing one (or twenty) into my mouth...which is a discipline I've never really had. But seeing results on the scale and hearing from other people's successes (namely my mother, who is also on the diet) inspires you to visualize the new and improved (NOW WITH LESS GRAVITY) you! Stay strong and realize this is only a short period of time which can totally revamp your entire future!

Sorry...didn't log in, but this is my comment. Also, to add further...if you ABSOLUTELY have to cheat on this diet, make sure you aren't using sugary stuff which completely throws your body into chaos. If you must cheat, think about what you're about to eat while chugging a glass of water.:clover:

Hi, superhauck!

Congratulations on the 10 lb. loss so far! I wanted to say I completely agree with you about the need to find that inner resolve and not stray from the plan. I'm in my 7th week and my husband is in his 3rd week, and neither of us has felt much urge to cheat. It's a little harder for my husband as he has a sweet tooth, but he eats his fruit and puts stevia in the yogurt to help with that craving. I am so fixated on attaining my target weight that I can't imagine throwing it off in any way!

As for the debate about getting sick on the diet, for what it's worth, neither of us has had a sniffle. :)

oh, btw...
i was pretty sick b4 the diet :sick: and am surrounded by sickos lately-
but since i'm on the 1st personal my immunesystem seems waaaay better already- eventhough i only started 2,5 weeks ago i've experienced that suddenly i'm not only not the first 2 b knocked out, but keep well and fit when the others around me go down like flies.
(admittedly i felt like starving the first 10 days- but that was the only "feeling sick" i've experienced so far).;)
so i hope u will feel just as good soon!!

Hey everyone!! In 2 days I will have been on the 1stPD for 4 weeks and I'm anxiously awaiting to weigh myself! I know I have lost though because I'm able to get on a smaller pair of jeans and I can tell definitely with shirts too.

As for being sick, I haven't gotten sick at all either, not the first headache, which I thought was funny, because usually when I cut the caffeine and choco-choco-chocolate I have FITS!!! So, for me it must be a combination of the foods, hence the reason NO HEADACHE! :)

As for cravings, I'm doing way better then in the beginning when I felt like I would just kill over for anything. I've managed to resort to if I felt a sweet tooth coming on, I would go and fix me some hot tea and put an Equal in it and munch down 2 crackers and that seems to do the trick.

{wave}Let's do this girls - I'll report back in a couple of days!

Hi all,

First of all, I hope that those of you who are feeling a bit under the weather get better!!

I've been on the diet for a week now, and I have to say that in the last two days, it's gotten MUCH MUCH easier! I know that in that first week to two weeks, each individual person experiences something different depending on old habits or personal attachment to food. And as Sasha reminded me, you have to have your mind in the right place to be successful with this diet. There's a lot of ways that we experience temptation to deviate from the diet, but if your priority is with your health then the temptations WILL go away with time.

Something that's key to dieting: SUPPORT!! Receiving support from your spouse, siginificant other, and friends will definitely help you get through the times of most temptation to deviate. If that means that you don't go to work parties anymore, or just take a friend with you that's also on the diet--- do what you need to do to remove the temptations. For me, this means that I don't watch the tube. I never liked fast-food, but when all I want is something I can't have, fast-food commercials start to look rather good. Gross right? *HAHA* I know... I also have an amazing boyfriend with whom is also on the diet. So when I get home, I don't have to deal with him enjoying that "something" that I can't have.

During that first week or so, finding something to distract yourself will help a lot! Something like knitting, crocheting, cards, online video games, scrapbooking, card making, quilting, sewing, mechanics (working on cars), small models (like airplanes), or even starting a book club or something! I've personally picked up knitting. So when I'm wanting to watch a movie in the evening, I just pick those needles up and my hands and mind are too busy for me to be thinking about popcorn. Maybe it would work for you too? I already read a lot, so that hasn't been anything new to distract me from food, but I've heard that starting a new book can also help distract yourself during those times you need it. That and it's a great mental exercise if you choose a book that's challenging your vocabulary!

I hope that this helps. Hang in there! It WILL GET BETTER!!:flower:

Hi Jaclyn -- I was 257 pounds (almost a year ago -- I start 1pd on February 2, 2007). Now I'm 145 pounds, and have been done with the diet for nearly 6 months.

What I discovered when I began was that I had to treat the diet as if it were the ONLY LIFELINE that existed for me. [The reason I started in the first place was that the doctor told me I WOULD die...because of my body weight, the amount of thyroid medication needed to keep my disease under control would actually kill me!]

Now, that said -- I don't know your own personal situation.

However, I DO know a couple of things:

1) If you treat YOUR personally prescribed diet as DOCTOR'S ORDERS "A PRESCRIPTION" (as in "Your Food is Your Medicine, Take It As Prescribed") it WILL, ABSOLUTELY, WORK. No question there.

2) If you do NOT "Take it As Prescribed" it will NOT WORK.

That's pretty much the whole story.

If you go on and off of the diet, there's no way your hormones can handle the "is she doing the diet"? "nope, she's not" "Oh, yes I guess she is" -- WITHOUT making your body feel ill.

What I know (and I lost nearly 40 pounds the first four weeks, by the way) is that it takes at least a week on the diet, with regular timed meals, foods that are regulated for proteins and sugars, etc. for your body to figure out that it DOESN'T NEED THE FAT that it's stored and then begin shedding that fat.

While the body is uncertain of what's going on during that first week, it sends every single distress signal it can to you to say "Hey, Jaclyn, I'm not happy here! You're not being "Normal" What are you Doing???" -- and THEN, about 7 days in, the body says "OHHHH, I get it. Why was I keeping all this fat? I'm being well fed and well nourished. No chance of starvation here!" and then it starts dropping its weight.

STICK TO IT. It's only for a little while, and I can tell you, with heartfelt absolute certainty, that you WILL BE A BETTER, HEALTHIER, HAPPIER person after 12 weeks.

I will also say that I'm having much more fun being a size 6 than I was as a size 22W! My husband and I go out quite regularly, and I make some choices about what I eat -- the "rules after the diet" allow you to do pretty much anything WITHIN the rules, and you DON'T gain the weight...but you still have to stay within the rules! (If you don't, the weight WILL come back).

I caught myself running up two flights of stairs yesterday...I got to the top, and then realized that I hadn't been able to run upstairs since the mid-1980s.

YOU KEEP ON IT. STOP GOING OUT TO DINNER. IF YOU'RE AFRAID YOU'LL MISS THE SOCIAL THING, HAVE YOUR FRIENDS MEET YOU FOR COFFEE INSTEAD OF FOR FOOD!!!

GIVE YOURSELF A CHANCE TO WIN ON THIS -- BECAUSE THIS DIET TECHNOLOGY WORKS!!!

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to say that I really appreciate the input from those of you that understood the purpose of my post. Being able to share personal experiences and support from you'all was encouraging opposed to a lecture that does anything BUT encourage me (personally). So thank you to those of you that understood me. {grouphug1}

As for an update, I haven't been able to get to the doctor yet, but I did speak with an RN and she stated that common symptoms of blood sugar related reactions are nausea and vomitting. I wasn't experiencing common flu-like symptoms (such as sensitive skin, etc.) that I normally do...So I am pretty sure it was related to my blood sugar. The final word will come after I have seen an M.D. -- I'll keep you all posted!

I went to the beach today (a little too long...yes mom, i'm red!)!! I did feel a little less self-conscious even after just 2 weeks on the diet. :shades: I have noticed the bloated feeling in my stomach has calmed down. Later, I noticed myself looking into the mirror thinking that my face looked a little slimmer as well. I haven't stepped back on the scale though, and will try not to until my 4 weeks is up.

I completely understand that you get what you put in to things. And I am happy with the progress I am making.

I hope you all have a marvelous and relaxing weekend. I will be heading back out to the beach, doing my usual cleaning routine, going to church, getting outside for exercise, and volunteering for an event my church is putting on for the homeless during the superbowl. Should be a great weekend! Enjoy!!!{cheerleader}

Thank you VERY much! :-) I'm having a lot of fun.

Tomorrow is "Fat Tuesday" the day before the first day of Lent -- here in Detroit, we call it "Paczki Day"...a paczki (pronounced "punch-key") is an incredible Polish "made only once a year for Fat Tuesday" treat. They're literally ONLY available on Fat Tuesday, and there will be lines at the bakeries beginning...well..NOW, probably!

LAST year I had just started the diet. THIS year, I get to have a Paczki! (I'm allowing myself one treat per holiday -- and I'm still at 145lbs!) I can have it with my carb meal, and I can guarantee you that much pleasure will be had and NO weight will be gained. I can also tell you that the sugar will probably knock me flat...but it's worth it!

One thing I haven't gone back to is wine or beer...somehow the exchange doesn't seem to be worth it any more.

So, happy Fat Tuesday, everyone, and THANKS for the Well Done! I very much appreciate it!

Hello everyone! Shasha, I am doing great! A woman at work today asked me if I had lost weight and I said, "I'm trying but I don't know because I haven't stepped on the scale" and she replied telling me not to lose anymore weight because I look great right now and would be too skinny if I lost anymore. I notice when I go out with my friends (with my size 2 friends) that not only them (as before) but now I get double takes and compliments too! I am enjoying the confidence boost and change in my body, but I'm also cheating here or there. I know being on the diet 100% would give me results quicker and more drastic but I'm just being honest with you all!! :innocent4: During the week, I follow my breakfast, eat my crackers and fruit, and pack my lunch, but occassionally I swerve off track for the occasional dinner out and on the weekends I don't stress myself out if I'm out with friends and not 100% faithful to 1PD. I am making it work for me and still seeing the benefits!!! I'll update you all as I hit week 4.

As for my mom, she is doing great too! She is more strict about following it and has already lost 10lbs. in just a few weeks. (:quiet:Shhh...don't mention I told you....she isn't supposed to weigh for another week or so)

The mother/daughter team is lookin' good! :applause: I am driving to my hometown this weekend so maybe I will post a mother/daughter team photo next week!!

{hi} there Jaclyn

I'm thrilled to hear that you are getting so many compliments! Well done! I hope these encourage you to always keep doing your very best.

As you mention eating out, I’m going to give you my standard eating out and travel tips right here and right now – I hope these will help you:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Your personal diet program is made out of the precise food items and weights you need to take. When travelling or eating out etc, the best would be to have a kitchen in which you can prepare your food just like at home. Unfortunately, this is not always practical and you may need to eat the available foods en-route. Therefore, a setback of your diet is unavoidable but you can try and minimize the setback by eating smart.

Try to find food items that are allowed on your diet (plain yogurt, hardboiled egg, vegetables, canned tuna and the likes). Eating these foods – even with no scale to weigh the foods – is better than eating a sandwich or a hamburger.

Eating out while you on a personal diet program where all your food intake is calculated carefully, might be a challenge. Some brave customers take their kitchen scale with them to the restaurant and order just a green salad. Others go out but just drink coffee / water. Eating out while on the program will set your progress back and we strongly recommend trying and avoiding this. If you have to go, just order a small green salad with a low-fat dressing on the side. This will help in having a smaller setback.

Hopefully, by eating smart the setback will not be as bad.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I look forward to seeing the photo’s of you & your Mom as well as knowing how much your little TEAM has lost... {boing}
