View Full Version : Have you FALLEN OFF THE BUS?

{bangdesk}I am thinking that there may be those of you who are reading the Forum in the early days of 2008 and who are thinking to yourselves this is such a great diet, I know it works, but I have already blown it over the holiday! It is no good even trying again because I have messed up my whole 12 week program by eating wrong over the holidays… I have wasted my money because I HAVE FALLEN OFF THE BUS during the holidays… :crying:

Well friends, the good news is YOU DO NOT HAVE TO STAY THERE LYING ON THE GROUND BLEEDING (or gaining weight) TO DEATH!! The RESCUE TEAM is here to help you!

Let’s face it Guys and Gal’s: dieting over the holiday has not always been easy for some of our clients – having all the holidays and celebrations, all seemingly so centered around food, family and friends can make it very difficult to keep FOCUS and not to fall of the bus…

If you have fallen off the bus, let’s take a look at what happened…

First things first, you have shocked your body… which up until that point was pretty happy because:
You were drinking all the water you needed to be healthy √
You had the precise correct amount of proteins and vegetables needed √
You were taking your multi-vitamins √
Your insulin levels were stabilized √ resulting in stabilized blood sugar √, your body was producing enough serotonin to control the cravings for foods √, especially starch, your fat burning hormone was doing a great job,√√√ your liver was not overworked by eating rich fatty meals…√√
In fact, your body was just going about very happy and everything was hunky dory and then suddenly: ...CRASH!!! …Flying through the windscreen and into the driver’s seat came a piece of 'harmless' Christmas cake!!! BANG!

While your mouth was going Mmmm, I want you to get the picture of what happened on the inside of your body: Immediately blood sugar soared! Body screamed at pancreas PRODUCE MORE INSULIN WE HAVE A SUGAR FLOOD!!! Pancreas got a big fright from being screamed at and scurries around working like mad and in her effort to please the boss, she OVER COMPENSATED… she thinks to herself you can never be too careful in a blood sugar flood… you never know how much more is coming or what the full impact of the disaster is going to be… my job is to produce insulin and I’m going to do just that!! Insulin, insulin, insulin… more, more, more…

The little insulin soldiers line up, one after the other and go to work, very hard and very fast. Their job is to move the sugar from the blood stream into the little cells. So they march along: Come, come sugar! We are marching you off to the little cells to be used as fuel… Left, right, left right, here we go, move it, move it… but because there are so much Insulin soldiers all over the place, all marching the sugar off to the cells, the cells get bombarded from 0 to 100 by an unexpected sugar fuel flood!

The little cells screams for help! Where must we go with all the sugar. Nobody listens! The little cells cry: there’s too much of this… Nobody cares… A few by standers who do hear what the little cells had to say simply shrugged their shoulders and replied: you’re the cells you use the sugar as fuel - if you have too much fuel, simply just store the excess for a rainy day!

Ah, store! Good idea! Open the grocery cupboards (your hips and thighs) and the cells being to store the excess! Working, working, working very, very hard (the fat ******* is now operational again)… storing excess sugar fuel as fat.

The little cells work so hard to store all the excess fuel that they don’t have time to focus on anything else – they just about put the person to sleep – make him feel really tired, no energy… that’s it, quiet down, relax, sleep… because they are not using food now, they are focused on the job of storing!! (You know that feeling after Sunday lunch?!?)

Meanwhile, back to the outer perimeter: because the body was shocked by the sudden sugar flood, and the body boss screamed at the pancreas who then overcompensated, and produced too much insulin, the insulin then move the blood sugar out of the blood stream into the little cells to fast and they ended up storing everything, the result is LOW BLOOD SUGAR.

When blood sugars levels drop too low, too fast we have another crisis!
Another panic! Oh now, NOW THE BLOOD SUGAR IS TOO LOW! Somebody somewhere signals the hunger alarm: and you’ve guessed it: the second crash hits shortly after this when ANOTHER PIECE OF CHRISTMAS CAKE COMES FLYING IN!

Everybody knows that a crash can sometimes leads to a full traffic pile up with one crash happening after another… a real disaster…

That’s what happens on the inside when Christmas Cake gets followed by Madam Doughnut and her little Choc Chip Cookie Friends and don’t forget Uncle Chocolate Fudge and Mr Muffin… makings of a disaster… poor little cells, they must just store and store and store and store!

Poor body! Poor person! Does not feel good after being in a CRASH… feels down and tired and sad - even exhausted and depressed… that’s because in all the mess of the accident the little Serotonin Fairy (who is very sensitive) was no longer able to wave her magic wand of happiness and wellbeing. She cannot work when blood sugar is racing up and down! Few people know this, but the Serotonin Fairy is not only responsible for feeling good, but, she also helps to control the craving for food: especially starch! So without her help, who knows where the starch craving will stop!

About Mr Growth Hormone – well he’s just one of those convenient kind of guys. When he sees trouble coming and hears body screaming at Pancreas, he simply ducks out! Packs up his little brief case and leaves town… meaning that the cells cannot use the fat that has been stored efficiently.

Like any other CRASH, falling off the BUS is not nice! It is no fun when your blood sugar is racing up and down! And you don’t feel good from eating all those rich fatty foods – heck, you may even have the runs!

WHAT TO DO: Understand what has happened on the inside of you and realize this is why you are not feeling well. Accidents normally require: police procedures, going over what happened, regret and some soul searching etc.

You need to make a decision that from now onward you are going to be a more careful driver of your precious little car! It’s the only one that you have been give! You don’t want to write her off or bash her up! She’s your little precious car!

TIME TO FIX IT: you must go back to the repair shop BY GETTING 100% BACK ONTO YOUR EATING PLAN AGAIN!!!

Yes, the first three days WILL be difficult!!! What did you expect? To be in an accident without any bumps, bruises, broken bones, or fractures? You will be stiff and sore!!

Your insulin will again trigger in expectation of the next sugar flood, leading to some low blood sugar and hunger… but when your pancreas realizes the coast is clear and there is nothing to fear, she will ease back into her normal job of producing enough insulin at a time.

TIPS: During the fist week or 10 days avoid the yogurt and cheese options as these are the least filling meals. Please take a second multi-vitamin each day at lunchtime - this will help!

In the pleasant environment of stabilized blood sugar, the Serotonin Fairy will again fly in to wave her magic wand leaving you feeling good and in control again of the situation again.

And, when the coast is clear and the crisis is gone, and your little car is back on the road again Mr Human Growth Hormone will come back again and quietly start working behind the scenes: breaking fat down into water for the cells to use as energy in order to empty out the over stuffed grocery cupboards again.

You need to resolve to drive more clearly!!! You only have one little car!

The bus wants to leave to a slimmer, healthier, happier YOU in 2008!!

You now know what to do… make a new decision, commit to it and don't look back!!! {elmo}

Thanks so much, Shasha -- I just love this analogy and it makes it really easy to understand just what that little "cheat" does to our body. What would we do without you, our Super Moderator!!! :flying:

Thanks dear Shasha! I am happy to report that I have not ever completely fallen off the bus. The worst I've done so far is have extra crackers and one night we had to go out to dinner and I KNOW I ate a bigger portion of meat than I should have. I LOVE this thread and am so happy you've brought it to our attention. It is so helpful to realize what we would be doing (or have done) to our bodies when we cheat. I swear you have scared the beejesus out of me and I don't want to set myself back any time. I have to go to Vegas next weekend and have found myself saying "well maybe one drink won't hurt or set me back too much", but after reading this I don't want to deviate at all!!! I will stay strong - I promise!

yaaa, shasha-angel dispossesses us of all those nasty cheating-daemons :clown: ups..:devil:, isnt she?!?!!!! :innocent2:

i also printed the whole thing out and read very carefully last nite -again- :reading:
despite the "shasha"-approved deviations (fruit and cracker when feeling dizzy, low, depressed or PMSsed), i wouldnt put my system under that kind of stress, though, as my body deserves better than that - (esp. as iz always been good 2 me)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

{hi} there GOOD GIRLS!

Thanks for the feedback Broni and CyberBabi

{grouphug1} and {goodjob}...

It is scary how easily it can become to think of having 'just one drink'... when you've had it you will probably have just another 'just one drink' ... and so on... or whatever it is that is tempting you...

I'm glad that you read this post - anything that can help you stay on track is worth holding near and dear and I'm very pleased if this keeps your motivation going :weights: strong!

Remember AZKAT who said: TO BE THIN IN BODY MUST BE THIN IN MIND... so please guard your thinking... cos your body travels where your mind leads it!

Hey everyone!

I just want to give my little testament to the power of the forum support-I decided I could go it alone, and boy did I ever fall off the bus!! AH!!!!! Not only that, but I got super lost in the middle of nowhere...

I started getting frustrated with the HUGE guilt I felt whenever I ate something I new I shouldn't. I thought it would be fun to "eat for real" and just love myself the way I looked, regardless of what I eat. But I realized that I knew I was capable of more and I was only lying to myself-eating DOES NOT make you feel better! As a matter of fact, I felt disgusting.

But reading the posts has me back on track, and I am happy to say I am losing weight again and loving life, despite the stress of upcoming finals! This little girl is gonna stick to her goals and make daddy proud!

Thanks for all of your encouragement and Sasha, your explanation is awesome! Way to go, everyone! I think it's time to upgrade the bus to the little engine that could: "I think I can, I think I can..." Keep on chugging!

Hi Shasha,

I have a couple of questions for you. I'm closing in on my eight week weigh-in and am wondering when I take the next blood test. This discussion about changing the food options has me curious. I almost strictly eat fish and chicken. I rarely eat the meat option. I also have high cholesterol and am on Liptor. My personal doctor had me take a blood test last week prior to renewing my meds. I'm anxious to see if my 30 pound loss has helped my numbers.

I have another question. It looks like I will be re-newing at the end of the 12 weeks. I'm okay with this. I figured I have been heavy for 16 years, staying on the diet for another three months is not that big a deal and worth it to my long term health.

I'm getting very interested in exercising. I swam in college and have been in good shape (fitness) my whole life. Would it be possible to start swimming or walking on the treadmill if I keep my heart rate low? The thought of waiting another 3 months to start to swim or walk is a bit depressing to me. Going slow won't be an issue as I'm sure I'm pretty out of shape!!! My goal is to swim at Master Nationals next May and I want to get started on that goal.

I have to admit not weighing more often has relaxed me a bit because my weight loss has slowed considerably. So, I'll "weigh in" with my results on Friday. I'm going home to Phoenix this weekend and my parents have not seen me since I lost all the weight. Can't wait to see their faces!!!

Thanks for all you do. Your posts keep me going as well as all the support from the fellow 1st PDers!

Take care,
Swimmer

Hey Daddieslittlegurl - welcome back! Thanks for sharing your experience. I've had a few of those same thoughts, why can't I be happy the way I am...because the way I am is what makes me unhappy! Food was just a temporary comfort, and in the end it made me feel worse for what it was doing to me, and what I let happen.

Anyway - that has been a huge motivation, and whats kept me from straying, that every day I feel less and less self conscious about how I look, and its exciting to think that not only does it feel better on the inside, but one day we'll all be happy with whats on the outside too!

{hi} there Daddyslittlegurl

Thank you for your post and {goodjob} I'm thrilled to hear how you've bounced back just by reading through the FORUM!!!

It's always better when you have buddies by your side!!! {grouphug1} So we can all do this together with you!!!

I would like to ask you to please change your little engine from "I think I can, I think I can " to a certain "I KNOW I CAN!! ~ I KNOW I WILL!! {cheerleader}"

{hi} there Swimmer

Blood tests are done on 4, 12, and 16 weeks and every 8 weeks after this depending on how long you need to be on diet in order to loose the excess fat. (Remember some clients join with 10 pounds to loose, others 100 pounds...)

Following your blood tests Dr Cohen will give you feedback on if your program needs to change or if you need to change the way in which you are following the program.

You may bring back moderate exercises such as swimming providing that you listen to what your body is saying... and how you feel.

Dr Cohen says that you may do moderate exercises providing that the exercise you do does not increase or stimulate your appetite (make you hungry) – the big key will be to listen to your body ie: see how you feel and what you are able to manage comfortably.

If you do exercise, I recommend that you eat your apple 20 minutes prior to exercising and that you take a second multi-vitamin each day at lunchtime.

Hope this helps you to reach your goals {cheerleader}

And, I was thinking, maybe you should take a camera with to have a visual memory of your parents faces - maybe ask someone to take the photo for you - I mean, if you are 30 pounds less and hiding behind a camera, they are sure to keep looking for someone who looks like the old you did!!!

We'd all love :jumping2: to see those photo's!!! {boing}

{hi} there Iisrias

Yes, I agree with you 100% and I believe we have all had thoughts like this at one time or another ~ especially when you start to look good and feel great, you can be tempted to stop just there... you can begin to feel comfortable and in fact even a bit lazy about dieting further and pushing through to the point where you reach your actual goals... the point where you can Refeed and teach your body the secrets to on going success...

But, getting half way there is not {noway} the place to stop and set up tent! You need to move on from good to better to BEST! :plane:

I found something really stunning in a book written by Joel Osteen called YOUR BEST LIFE NOW and I'd like to quote what he said: "That's a good start, and it took some real effort to get to where you are. But don't get comfortable. Don't be satisfied with a little improvement. Begin believing for better progress and press on to the best."

I honestly believe this is what every Dieter needs to do - push a little harder, go a little further and make those dreams a reality!!!

No matter how long it takes, keep walking towards your goal - a 6 month journey or even a journey of 1 whole year to somewhere that you really want to go by far beats walking in a circle around and around and around the same mountain of gaining and losing and gaining and losing...

MAKE THIS THE LAST DIET YOU EVER DO! {cheerleader}

Its always good to know why I've stuck to this diet like glue! Actually the threat of having to be on it longer has been quite a motivator for me! Just wish it would come off a little faster!

{hi} there LesKiya

WELL DONE on sticking to your diet like glue {goodjob} this way you know that you are making sure you achieve the best possible results! :clapping3: OH YEAH!

One cheat can cost you up to a week and there's no point in wasting time and going down that road - all you will do is become frustrated and get older in the process...

At the same time you need to remember, that you did not gain your excess weight overnight - it took months, sometimes even years to gain and as such, you need to allow your body the time it needs to be restored to health and wellness - one day at a time, one pound at a time - in fact on a daily base, walking one step at a time to your goal weight...

KEEP GOING!!! You are doing GREAT!!! {cheerleader}

A few tips that could help: cheese is higher in salt, which could lead to water retention, so you may decide to reduce the number of times per week that you choose cheese as an option.

Fruit and crackers are optional, if you are not hungry you may decide to leave some of these out. (If you are hungry, rather eat all your fruit and crackers than be hungry!)

Hi Shasha,

I love the Fallen Off the Bus post. I was on the program only two weeks when I fell off it HARD... :sadeyes: (for a week) and am now completely dedicated to it again. For this past week (my cheat week) I have felt sick, tired, and a little depressed, and your wonderful visual of what was happening inside my body made sense of all of that! THANK YOU!!

I can easily identify the stressors that triggered my fall, but more importantly than that, I need to plan my "escape route" for the next time. (Love your visuals!)

I will print out the crash scenario and post it where it is in my face and in my business and I can't ignore it.

Also, I will try to think of my body, and myself, as the child I once was. I would protect my own two daughters with my life, and I think the "little girl" inside ME deserves this same protection from crashes and harm.

Thank you for the support offered here.

Thank you for your very kind words :bighug: I’m so glad that this post helps you! Always keep it close, as in your heart...

MORE THAN THAT, I’m THRILLED that you are now DRIVING TO GOAL AGAIN!!! {goodjob}
