Hi Everyone- Today is my first day! So far so good- although not to many people have had to deal with me. :) It was really hard to drive right by Starbucks without stopping! :praying: My biggest accomplishment this weekend was finding the perfect scale! It is small, simple to use and measures all the way down to 1 gram! I got it at Target. I would love to know what you all do for breakfast. I ate yogurt with apple this morning- I think it was the first time in my life that I have ever had plain yogurt :party1:! I love this forum. You all are so very helpful. :) I wish you all a great week!

Hi and welcome,
Plain yogurt is deffinitly new to me also. I add a little sugar substitute and cinnimon and it taste so much better. In the receipt section there are some great breakfast ideas - zucchini hashbrowns, vegetable quiche etc. :hungry: Starbucks is still a treat for me. Iced coffee and unsweetened iced green tea with my own sugar substitute are nice. :party3: What has really helped me on this plan is to tell myself it's only 12 weeks. Tomorrow I can say it's only 8 weeks. Two friends have said, " it's been 4 weeks already? Wow!" I weigh myself on Mondays but I did hop on the scale last Wed. and 17 pounds have already left me. This program has also helped with my self esteem, just knowing that I can do this 100% and be totally committed has made me feel really good about myself and I'm sure it will work for you too! :applause:
Good luck on your new journey and Happy Trails to You. :surf:
Take care,
Lynett

Welcome to Cohen land, the land of the getting smaller and doing it pretty fast. :) If you stick to it 100%, people will wonder if your ok, it goes down so quickly. Today at graduation parties, I saw a ton of ppl who havent seen me since i started this. They were floored and all wanted to hear about it. It was pretty fun and made up for just drinking diet pop and smelling the food. You can do this too!

Hi Beeman's Mom!
Welcome.
I usually have yogurt mixed with a packet of stevia and chopped nectarine - about 1/2.
I think it's really filling and just the right combination of flavors.

i like to put 0% greek yoghurt (like fage brand) and a small mango in my magic bullet.
it makes the sweetest, yummiest whipped breakfast. i do not even need the stevia.
i have never been a big mango eater before...and now i am hooked.
also cooking tilapia w/ mango and cilantro is the bees knees!! so yummy and fresh and low cal.
enjoy your program-

Welcome Beeman's Mom!
Don't drive by Starbucks, you can still stop. I have the unsweetened Green Tea at least daily (with a splenda) - it is so refreshing and a nice treat.
For breakfast I typically have a plain yogurt with a little Stevia. If my husband's cooking, he'll make me a smoothie with my yogurt, ice, water, and whatever fruit is handy. It's suprisingly filling in a smoothie form. On the weekend, sometimes i have an egg with veggies.
Welcome again - and best of luck to you!

HI Beeman's Mom and welcome! They're right, you can still have Starbucks, but maybe you don't want to go if you can't have a "naughty coffee", huh? You know yourself so if you're not satisfied with sticking to plain old house blend coffee, or with having the unsweetened Green Tea you're better off still driving by. You're off to a great start and I'll look forward to watching your progress!!

Lynett-
Thank you for your response. I like your thinking as it has only been 4 days for me...and although all is going well...it is definitley a big change- I keep think about what you said...12 weeks!! I am also very tired. I am not sure if that is just my crazy job or this major change in what I am eatting and no caffine :hypnotic:. The two of us have the same goal- it is really exciting and encouraging for me to see how well you are doing!!! Congrats!!! I can't figure out how to get my ticker on my signature. I hope you are having a great week!

Beeman's Mom -
On the main Forum page, second topic from the top is "1st Personal Diet Tickers" - click on that and it will take you to the window where you can design your ticker and select a PIN for it. Once you've made your choices and saved them, you will be given the option of copying a link in HTML or BB code. Copy the BB code and then go to your Control Panel page. Select "Edit Signature" at the top left, and when the window appears, paste the BB code for your ticker into the box. Preview your signature to see that it works. From then on, when you update your ticker on the original link, the changes will automatically show up in your posts.
Easy!

{hi} there Beeman's Mom
{sorry} to hear that you are feeling tired :comfort:
This can be linked to a drop in blood pressure, which may be diet related, but can also be as a result of bathing in too hot water, exercises, stress, not enough sleep etc. Please take good care of yourself and try to get enough sleep etc. Please take good care of yourself and try to get enough sleep.
Most important, please take a second multi-vitamin each day at lunchtime and please insure that your daily multi-vitamin intake does not exceed 5 mg of Vitamin B6 as per your New Customer Guide.
This extra vitamin can really do the world of wonders to how you are feeling...
If you are on any blood pressure medication, this tired feeling is a sure sign that you should visit your personal doctor so that he or she can reduce or change your current medication.
Hope to hear you {bouncing} back soon!

WHAT IS THIS Stevia I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS
MrsPeel
06-10-2008, 09:09 PM
Stevia is a natural sweetener, though most health food stores keep it in the nutritional supplement section. There are several brands, and it can be in powder or liquid form. Most people detect a certain aftertaste, but it isn't hard to get used to and it hardly noticeable in strongly flavored drinks or foods.

What Is The Diffrence Between This And Splenda
Hippychick
06-10-2008, 09:14 PM
Hi Caron,
I had never heard of it before until I started to read about it here on the forum. It's a sugar substitute or dietary aide. I read that you should purchase it in the powder form otherwise it has a bad after taste. It also comes in a liquid form. It comes from a plant originally from Paraguay? I think thats right. There is also an unofficial 1pd web sight and Island girl has a couple of links so you can read about it some more. It is suppose to be healthier for you, no saccerin. I purchase it in the little packets. It's great to turn your water into lemonade. I use 2 packets and 1 lemon from my fruit allowance, add it to my water for the day. No problem getting in all my water. :applause:
Take care,

Splenda is sucralose, a man-made artificial sweetener which is created by chlorinating sucrose, or sugar. It is not zero calorie, as one packet has 3.31 calories and this is largely due to the maltodextrin filler which is used to make the product fluffy.
Many people (myself included) believe that Splenda is not completely safe and therefore we look for other natural sweeteners to use. Splenda has been, for some people, associated with rashes, migraines, and allergic reactions. The FDA has approved it as safe, however.
Stevia, as I mentioned earlier, is a natural sweetener with a very low glycemic index. It has been used in Japan for decades and in South America as a natural treatment for type II diabetes. The leaves have 30-45 times the sweetness of sucrose. It is approved for use but only if it called a dietary supplement.
Hope this helps.
MrsPeel
06-11-2008, 01:41 AM
You can Google "stevia" or look in Wikipedia for fast info. If you Google "Splenda" you will see many sites with contraindications for its use.
As Lynett mentioned, some types of stevia have a strong aftertaste - sometimes like licorice or anise - but generally you can find a brand you like which has little flavor other than sweetness.
Bronwyn
06-11-2008, 08:04 AM
Hi Mrs. Peel,
Since we live in the same area, do you have a particular brand you've found to be sweeter and where do you get it? I haven't even seen it at Whole Foods. I keep looking...
Thanks!
MrsPeel
06-11-2008, 01:24 PM
Hey, Bron!
Yes, they do have a few brands at Whole Foods, but not like they used to because they now carry their own 365 brand of Stevia. If you ask someone in the supplements dep't., they can point it out. It cannot be classified as a sweetener so that's why you don't find it with xylitol, agave nectar, and sugar. I am currently using Now Foods Stevia Extract - comes in a bright orange box and says "no aftertaste" in big letters. It's pretty good. I have also used SweetLeaf (okay - a lot of filler, though) and NuNaturals (which I love, but does have more of an anise aftertaste).
And of course, you know about Zevia - did you ever try it? I get it special ordered through the Whole Foods in Arcadia. MrPeel and I drink it rather than diet Coke. :)

Hi Mrs. Peel,
Thanks for the zeevia tip. I saw it on another post and had to try it.
Pre Cohen's I drank diet coke everyday and didn't see a problem..until I didn't have it. Then I realized, I was a bit addicted to the diet coke. Also, I found that it made me hungrier:sadeyes:. All the time I was drinking it, I knew that it couldn't be very good for my system, so when I started 1PD I quit drinking diet soda altogether.
After reading your post and looking into stevia a bit more, I thought zeevia might be a good alternative. I am happy to say that it is delicious, but more importantly it doesn't seem to make me hungry:party1: YAY!
The whole nutritional supplement but not approved as a food additive is the biggest scam! Goes to show you how much controll those powerful lobbies really have.
Anyways, thanks for the suggestion, Zeevia is now my occasional:innocent4: tasty treat!
MrsPeel
06-11-2008, 05:48 PM
Hey, SurferGirl!
Glad you like the Zevia - if you're going to have a soda, it's definitely the one to have! I was never a Diet Coke gal, but when I started 1PD, my nutritionist gave me her blessing with one exception: she begged me not to drink Diet Coke or any other soda with aspartame. She believes, as do many others, that it is one of the very worst chemicals you can ingest and that it has long-reaching effects on the brain.
You're right about the powerful sugar lobby - they were instrumental in pressuring the FDA to relegate stevia to the dietary supplement status. Stevia is cheap and plentiful and its use threatens the cane sugar industry. Splenda is fine with them as it is still initially sugar, before the chlorination process. I remember about 10 years or so ago, a new sugar product came on the market which was made from beets rather than sugar cane (I believe it was called Spreckel's). I liked it very much and switched over to it, and in less than two years, it had disappeared completely. Big Sugar strikes again!

Thanks for all the info on Stevia I went to my health food store last night and got some and made me a lemonade with it and i really like it. TO be honest I never have given Splenda a thought if good or bad I have used it. But since I'm learing to eat better it makes more sence to me to not use atrifical foods. I want to eat healthy and be healthy. Does anyone out there have a good recipe for a salad dressing that is not so tart I made one and boy is it tart with the balsamic vinegar and spice. Please let me know if anyone has any good ideas thanks

{hi} there Everyone
I just want to take a moment to SALUTE MRS PEEL !!!
and say a BIG THANK YOU!!! For all this fantastic information that she has shared with everyone!
{king}
The very word artificial should raise our eyebrows…
Stevia is a well known natural and safe alternative to the numerous different artificial sweeteners that are out there.
Remember that suppliers have no concern for our health and wellbeing ~ they are interested only in the $$$$ so you need to look into what you put into your body...

A very WARM WELCOME TO YOU :bighug:
About salad dressing:  You may want to try diluting it with a bit of water and adding sweetener to this with herbs etc.
Apple cider vinegar diluted with sweetener and herbs also makes for a tasty dressing… Please see the recipe section…
Someone even told me they make tanyg dressing using diet Fanta Orange and 5 ml of mayonnaise…
Best would be to experiment and find something you like {pot}

Hi Mrs. Peel,
You really know your stuff! I'm so glad you are on the forum. I can't imagine how else I would hear about this info.
I guess we all take it for granted that our government wants us to be healthy. But with an epidemic of obesity (especially in children ) you'd think there'd be a huge push to find natural healthy ways to feed the population and eliminate the junk:munchies:. I don't know about you guys, but I sure haven't noticed a decrease in the amount of tempting junk food available.
Thank goodness all of us found Cohen's so we can take responsibility for our own health and not rely so heavily on what's readily available. And thanks to Mrs. Peel for pointing this out!!

i am huge proponent of stevia. i have used it for about 4 + years. i first bought it while living in the UK.
stevia is a natural product, as mrs. peel and sha-sha have posted.
it does not really affect the sugar industry, it affects the SWEETENER industry.
sugar and stevia cannot be owned....they are plants, that anyone can grow and sell.
equal and splenda and sweetnlow are all made of chemicals, they are man made and can be patented and owned and lobbied for....
stevia will not get FDA approval as a sweetener because no one can make any money with it....except perhaps a farmer & who would want that? LOL!!!!!

{hi} there Everyone
We live in a sad world where they would rather sell us approved 'foods' that are not really foods at all in order to make $$$’s rather than care about the consequences to our health!!:sadeyes:
The best thing about Dr Cohen’s program is that it brings REAL FOOD back into your eating plan… no more processed foods or instant foods that are filled with chemicals and that are high in fats and sugars with little or no nutritional value. So many of these processed foods actually contain sugar in an effort to make you addicted to them so that you want more and more pushing up their sales etc.
The more we move back to what is natural, veggies, proteins, fruit etc pure clean drinking water etc the healthier I believe we will be… I believe this is the reason why everyone on 1PD feels SO MUCH BETTER!! {wave}

Here in the USA, there's a TV commercial running now for Pizza Hut, for a new product they call the "P'Zone" - the ad shows teenage boys scarfing down these GINORMOUS half-moon shaped pastries stuffed with (and they BRAG about this!) "over a POUND of meat and cheese"!
The first time I saw this, I got so mad I didn't know where to go with it. Yes, I know it's all about the money, but don't they live in the same world as us? In a country where obesity is epidemic, especially among young people? It is irresponsible in the extreme to create and promote worthless products like this.
Bronwyn
06-16-2008, 04:25 PM
Here Here Mrs Peel!! I agree it is so disgusting and discouraging to see those commercials. The fast food industry is ridiculous and no wonder obesity is of epidemic proportions here in the U.S. In fact, other countries are beginning to follow suit and mostly because the fast food is moving into their neighborhoods too. I think the best thing we can do is lead by example and try to affect those around us. I've got two more people signed up on 1PD. I also know (or at least hope) that my little boy will continue on this path we've laid for him in his first 2 1/2 years of life. He has a very healthy diet and now my husband and I can say the same and lead by example.

Hi there Everyone
When I read Mrs Peel’s LATEST rant, I had exactly the same thought as SurferGirl – what makes me mad is that they never show it the way it REALLY IS!
The people who are stuffing themselves in those commercials are always SUPER THIN!!!
And they LOOK SUPER HEALTHY and SUPER GORGEOUS! {scream}
{mood} - what kind of a cruel lying picture doesn’t that create in the minds of ESPECIALLY OUR YOUNG PEOPLE! Today, kids are lead to believe THIS IS FOOD! Everyone is eating like this! This is a NORMAL size portion! And, when they end up ballooning out, not only will they feel fat and uncomfortable, they will be slumped into depressing thoughts like: WHAT’S WRONG WITH ME?
I could just {slapfight} those careless advertisers!!! They make me feel like {explode}
Okay, so now I'm officially all out of angry little icons... but you get what I'm feeling...

Hi all,
This is about a three week late response to Mrs Peel but I couldn't agree more - there is a complete failure of responsibility in this type of advertising!
Not diet oriented but health-related nonetheless, the best ad I ever saw was one for a sun protection range from Boot's (the main chain pharmacy in the UK). It was done very much in the style of a Calvin Klein ad - you know, black and white photography, impossibly gorgeous people in skimpy swimsuits lying on the beach, breathy voiceover etc - but the voiceover was saying "If you could see the long-term damage the sun has on you skin etc" and all the while the screen keeps flickering to shots of the same people with terrible sun damage; scars from skin cancer removal etc.
I think advertising like that would go a long way - it's not even helpful to say this and that might damage your heart etc in 30 years because it's not an immediate threat to young people. If it was - eating like this will make you feel and look terrible, maybe they would wise up sooner.
