Hi Shasha!
I was hoping you could help me with a question on alternate sweetners. For me Aspertame is not an option, I know too much about it and just can't stand the thought of putting it in my body. I found some other possibilities and I emailed my consultant (who could work on his or her people skills, by the way). Anyway, I asked about erythritol and the response I got back was simply "No" but there was no explanation.

I find it easier to stick to the program when i understand why on these various points and I have followed enough threads to know that you are wonderful at explaining why. So can you explain to me why a sugar alcohol is not allowed even though it is literally 0 impact on the blood sugar and as a carb and definitely does not affect insulin? I just need to understand that and maybe you can point me in the direction of a great alternative that is not NutraSweet or Splenda? I want to try some of these treats, but I need a sweetner that I can use.

Help? :praying:

actually i posted this this afternoon, but it vanished!!
i also take stevia, as iz natural and proven 2 have loz of health benefiz (fighz plaque and skinprobs just 2 mention some)
what outrages me here is that the WHO oppresses the knowlwdge and distribution of stevia and hyped aspartame 2 obviously keep their servanz depending, addicted and sick! - someone like that is easier 2 manipulate and 2 use as a milk-cow (in terms of spending money and keeping industries going)..

i never believed in those theories but things around here bcome more evident by the day--
stevia is 4bidden in all of europe as nutrition and it seems not much better in your country, if not all your shops sell stevia, by now known as the only healthy sweetness (i do some reading on sugar and health, 2 not miss it so much and quit it all2gether .. and actually one should b disgusted what it does 2 the body.... ohohoh!!! if it wasnt that goooood!- but i know- since reading these articles that i became a junky those last years )

sorry bout the lenght - got carried away!! (and some things have 2 b said!!)

excuse me, admin or whoever thinx i'm stupid!
y r my posts about stevia always disappearing without even the slightest sign of interference on your side? and the moment i post the longer one, the short comes back and the long vanishes?
obviously i'm rite about the oppression of knowledge that serves people....
is that some kind of big brothers watching u game?

lol. that's funny. I was going to ask where that other thread is, but I appreciate your reponse anyway ;-) The problem for me with stevia is that I really, really am sensitive to the after taste, so I have tried it, but alas, tis not for me :(

This is why I was hoping for more information on alternatives.

cyberella

check the internet or healthstore again! there is also the alternative of having stevia less bitter-
just in case that thaz the aftertaste u dislike! :(
if u dont like this artificial sweetner-like taste (which had me long time sceptical on how natural it could really b), well then we got a problem here with the stevia...

Really? I've only had the one kind in my coffee once and I hated it. So if there are differnt types (I had no idea). What kind do you get? I know you're in Oz and i'm in Florida, but the brand and type may be here, too :praying: If so, i'll try it!

WorthyQueen, cyberella is in Austria, but her info on stevia is correct. I am in L.A., and there are many brands available, but all have the licorice/anise aftertaste you (and I!) don't care for. It is a problem - before I was on the 1PD, I used organic agave nectar which does not have an aftertaste and I actually now like better than cane sugar! But it is not allowed on the plan, as the consultants consider it to be fruit sugar. Xylitol is also good - made from birch trees - but also not allowed. I guess we have to wait until refeeding . . .

However, Zevia sodas are sweetened with stevia and don't have that weird taste. They are actually a great substitute for diet sodas, as they don't have nasty aspartame in them and also no phosphorus. Hope this helps!

i ve posted over 280 messages and none have vanished so far-
the bugs seem 2 love it sweet, it seems!! {rofl}

yes, worthyqueen! the differences r huuuge!
i dont like the aftertaste 2 but like it better than no sweetness at all or destroying my health-
anyhow: i have "steevia dulce" (liquid), that tasz like sh***, stevia rebaudiana fluid (as it says: liquid) from G&M- is an import, so it could b from the us and tasts perfect and the best is the powder, but thaz from a german company.
they sell stevia with less bitterness- u have 2 ask and try.. :eyebrow:
sorry 2 not b of anymore help!

MrsPeel, Okay, that is awesome. I also used Agave for all the same reasons you mentioned! Mostly I don't mind not having a sweetner, but occassionally (like now when the monthly annoyance arrives), I get the cravings and I just like the idea of having things I can have around for that occassional urge. Oh well. What is that soda called?? I don't drink soda, but every now and then (as mentioned prior) :innocent4:

That's okay. Thanks anyway, Cyberella. sorry about the geographical mis-mention. I hadn't realized you're from Austria. Either way, I did know you were outside the US - so at least I had that right :)

Well, i'll just have to keep tryin' stuff 'till I find what works.

Hi, WorthyQueen!
I was not a soda drinker, either, but MrPeel and I found that we enjoyed a "coke-tail" hour on the plan, to help us feel as though we had a little treat each day, and so we would miss our wine a little less! We started with Diet Coke with lemon in it, and then my nutritionist literally begged me to stop the Diet Coke, as she is extremely worried about the aspartame dangers. So I did a little research and found Zevia, online - finally, a "diet" soda without the awful artificial sweeteners! I can't seem to get the local Whole Foods to carry it, so I order it directly from the manufacturer. But there are stores which carry it, scattered around - just none in L.A., unbelievably.
So now we have our Zevia coke-tail when the sun's over the yard-arm!

I like the brand Sweet Leaf. It is sold in Whole Foods. I haven't noticed any bitterness.

{hi} there Everyone

Especially WorthyQueen who's in search of a bit of sweetness in her life, not all the time, but, every now and then...

The only sweeteners (and I know you don't like these but I'll list them anyway for the record) that have been approved for use on the 1st Personal Diet Program are the following:

Saccharin (Sweet'N Low) – unlimited (*)
Aspartame (Equal) – unlimited (*)
Sucralose (Splenda) – up to five packets of 1 gram each per day not including your diet soda.
Stevia – up to five packets of 1 gram each per day not including your diet soda.

(*) To the best of our knowledge these artificial sweeteners are regulated by the FDA. However, we suggest that you generally try to minimize the use of artificial sweetener because of claims related to possible damage that might be caused by artificial sweeteners and the public awareness regarding these issues.

To my mind, Stevia is by far the most natural - and I'm sorry that you's don't like the after taste... maybe try using a bit less or mixing the powder into water first to dilute it because it's really very, very sweet.

Cyberella, girl you had me in stitches (laughing painfully)... There is NO conspiracy theory here regarding stevia :bighug:

Wishing you all SWEET DREAMS OF BEING SLIM AGAIN tonight!!! {cheerleader}

MrsPeel, Thanks so much for the clarification, I shall research it and add to my list of treats after the program :party1: unless it has Stevia or some other approved sweetner? Yeah, that surprises me that you don't have it in LA. I was born and raised there and we still have plenty of friends and some family there. It's usually the one place to find everything (like at Trader Joes *sigh*). We're quite behind on the East coast.

Shasha:
Thanks for explaining the sweetner issues, I am placated for the moment :eyebrow: Besides, I'm experimenting with other foods and whatnot and blindly finding my way. One week to go for my 4 week weigh in. I think I can hang in there 'till then.

WorthyQueen, Zevia is sweetened only with Stevia - hence the name. And it has the bonus of being without phosphorus, which is one of the not so good ingredients in Coke.

Ah, yes, Trader Joe's is awesome - but not so good on the 1PD plan! I do get my frozen chopped spinach there, though.

Can't wait to hear your 4-week weigh-in results!! :)

I've also read quite a lot about all these sweetners and Stevia seems to be the healthiest. I got mine at Trader Joe's and I did not like it - was not sweet enough... Did I pick the right one? Any other brands in the US?

MrsPeel

Bronwyn & WorthyQueen, I sure hope you like the Zevia! I wish they'd get their product into more stores, as that shipping is UGLY!

Mama, there are tons of different brands of stevia out there - maybe do an Internet search and read about different brands? landy recommends Sweet Leaf, which I am going to try. I haven't had trouble with the degree of sweetness, but the anise-like flavor is too weird for me in coffee and tea.

{hi} there Cyberella

I wonder if you can tell me, do the drops taste different to the powder?? I mean in food and tea or coffee?
