View Full Version : Worried about life after the diet
I have to ask this...I know I should focus on diet itself now and deal with life after diet when I'm done...but still - since I am constantly hungry... just thinking about being hungry after this diet scares me... :(
Anyone after Cohens...? Is it really easy to keep the weight afterwards? Is it only one way to handle it - starch once a day... or can we keep the ideal weight also with "healthy living" - meaning not necessarily eating starch once a day and avoiding fruit in the morning...??
Because I am ready to workout more:weights2:, cut down other calories, just to be able to have my apple and 1 tblspoon of peanut butter and coffee...or is it a no no forever if I wanna keep my ideal weight?
I mean, I'm a little confused here - is the only way to stay at target weight by staying away from starch whole day? I don't wanna eat chicken and meat so much anymore - meat simply doesnt make me feel good and it sucks having to eat sth just because it's "healthy" - if even is... And I can't imagine being without fruit - or just having 1 piece a day...I mean, I haven't had a day in my life without fruit...and now - thinking to be so limited forever just kind of scares me?
I just need some optimism, I guess... knowing life afterwards is more free than I imagine right now...
Because I would like to be eating the way my it feels best for my body - some fruit and of course, clean food, but not protein most of the day and only one meal with starch...that's still DIET for me:sadeyes:...
thanks

{hi} there Maya
Basically you have many different hormones in your body that control or regulate many different functions.
One such hormone is insulin - Dr Cohen calls this your fat storing hormone, another is human growth hormone (your fat burning hormone). There is also serotonin which controls the craving for food, especially starch.
When you are overweight, your body produces too much insulin, too little human growth hormone and too little serotonin - the result is that you have a fat f*ctory working on the inside of you and that you gain weight very easily.
On the 1st Personal Diet Program, Dr Cohen uses specific food for each person specifically to put a stop to their fat fact*ry and then reverses the process so that they end up loosing weight.
'Obesity Syndrome' the name that Dr Cohen has called this illness of hormones being out of balance is treatable but not curable.
This means that we can teach you which foods you need to eat in which way to have the least possible damaging effect. If you apply Dr Cohen's guidelines you will be safe. If however you go back to eating starch with every meal and you eat sweets in between your meals or snack on spoons full of peanut butter etc. you are not treating the illness but adding fuel to the flames because you will be triggering insulin constantly throughout the day. (Starting up your fat fact*ry.)
Your continued success is in not trigger so much insulin. How much starch you will be able to cope with will depend on how your body reacts and on what the reading on the scale is. Your body will show you what is too much - you will gain weight.
Peanuts are high in starch so they do trigger insulin, this does not mean that you can never have it again. It only means that you will need to watch how you eat it and, starch intake needs to be limited to once a day. It can be a mixture of starches such as peanut butter on bread but this should not be eating early in the morning for breakfast.
If on the rare occasion you do this, you will find that this food triggers hunger by 10:00 which then leads to your eating more and more during the rest of the day... not a good place to be because this will cause weight gain.
About fruit - you get diet fruit, good fruit, bad fruit... Dr Cohen says that if you were severely obese that you should avoid having fruits during the day - because your body is more sensitive to sugar. Most people can have a combination of fruit or a few portions or fruit salad quiet safely in the evenings after your starch meal. If you were not very over weight, you may certainly try having some of the diet type fruit during the day ie: your apple at 10:30 am etc. and see what happens. If you become hungry this was not right.
I believe the reason why you are hungry is because from what I remember, you are eating yogurt in the morning - this is the least filling meal - rather go with the egg and veggies, especially in cold weather. You may not like plain egg, well then try making something that you will like - maybe the hash browns with your zucchini - see the recipe section under ERF's up...

Thank You so much Shasha!!!!
I missed you
OK, I understand it all better now...
Actually, I haven't been overweight...people always thought I was in best shape...but I could cover it well, when I gained some pounds, too...
I just remember I was the thinnest when I ate fruit most of the morning and then lunch in the afternoon...I never had problems with fruit... And I never actually ate much in the morning - if I ate ANY food in the morning - that makes me hungry.
So, I would eat peanut butter with apple around midday the soonest! That would be almost like lunch...It killed my appetite and fullfilled me big time.I would have NO cravings of any junkfood if I had PB.
And I guess I'm just starving right now that's why I'm thinking so much about food... You know how it is - when you know you CAN, then it doesnt even sound so great, but when you know you CAN'T...the story is different...
Thanks for the explanation.
I believe this program, I know it works, I am just soooo hungry...

{hi} there Maya
Sorry about the hunger - wish I could just take it away for you!
:comfort:
Try the hash brown and on the same day try making the chicken soup form the other post... on that day also take a second vitamin at lunchtime and check that yours contain less than 5 mg of vitamin B6 - let me know how that goes.
I also recommend you get a nice book and read that to help take your mind off food. I remember one time feeling ravenous... and then, eventually I picked up a book and started reading... 5 minutes later I had to stop to empty my bladder and then went straight back to the great book I was reading... as I picked it up a thought crossed my mind: I'M NO LONGER HUNGRY!! That showed me that hunger can be all in the mind... you know you can't but then you want to... unless you are too busy to think about food.
Another interesting article that I read today was:
1 73% of American's are chronically dehydrated.
2 In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
3 Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
4 One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
5 Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
6 Preliminary research indicates that 8 - 10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7 A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzz short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
8 Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.
So, try drinking water when you feel hungry... let's see what works for you! {cheerleader}

I have only been on this diet for a short time (3 days to be exact) and I feel great. I have been doing exactly what Sasha stated. Drinking water. It does work. I have read alot of articles about how your body may think it is hungry but it is just that you need water.
Good Luck Maya
